Drawing Is Good For Your Soul
I want to be accomplished. I have a desire to be able to do things that aren't necessarily "important" but important to me. For example i love to play the piano. The way i further my knowledge and ability in this is by practicing and just playing anything that comes to mind. To some people this isn't important, but to me it is. It lets me express myself in ways that i cannot through words. Another example is writing. I accomplish this skill by not only being forced through school but also writing on this blog. One thing i long to excel at is drawing.
My reason for wanting this is, you can create things that are worth more than words, things that you can't say with your mouth, things you can't express through music or writing. So i made the decision that everyday for the next month i am going to draw, or sketch something.
So now i will tell you four good reasons why you should start to draw.
#1 - It's not expensive
All you need is a pencil and paper. And i think we all know that you have those supplies. Forget the people who say that you need a fancy sketch book or "legit" materials. In fact i like to stretch my abilities by using anything but normal materials. Such as, a sharpie, or pen and a napkin, or leaf, maybe even a wall (Shhh).
#2 - It helps you see the big picture and the small details
In order to be able to draw anything properly you need to see the picture as a whole, and still be able to see everything inside of it as an individual. It's like an orchestra each musician is their own but together they are an orchestra. It is the same with drawing. Like if you are drawing a tree, as a whole it is a tree but along with the tree there are leaves, and bark and maybe fruit.
#3 - It helps you unlock your creativity
Often times we are discouraged to express our creativity. In music there are rules and these rules are important for a time and place but there is a time when you can just play around with your instrument. That is how the great musicians came to be. They didn't just sit there playing the same thing as everyone else. They experimented and tried new things. Also our cultures discourages new things and different things, but in art we are encouraged to try new things because there is always new things to try. Things someone else hasn't tried yet. There is a whole new world out there for art that we haven't unlocked just yet.
#4 - It's a great way to make up for dead-space
Have you ever had those days when you just don't know what to do? or that you don't have anything to do? Maybe a summer afternoon. Drawing or sketching is an amazing way to put to use that brain. Plus it relieves stress.
I hope you see that drawing is an extremely useful tool you should now utilize. Now i bid you farewell and good drawing!
