God of the Present Tense
If you haven't noticed already, I REALLY like Jon Foreman's music. If you didn't, well here are some facts for you; fact: every song I have talked about on this blog was written by him. Fact: I listen to at least one of his songs almost every day, if i don't it usually means that i didn't listen to music during that day or couldn't control what music was played. Fact: I have all of his own music (the albums Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer) memorized, the reason i do not have all of Switchfoot's memorized is because there is a freakin' lot of songs (which is AMAZING). Anyways, you get the point. I like Jon Foreman.
I find that most artists on the radio have at least some talent, but do not utilize it to their full advantage. This is not the case with Jon Foreman. I have many reasons why i like him. to list a few; I simply love his voice, I agree with the things he promotes, his lyrics are full of depth and powerful meaning, he chooses rhythms and notes that perfectly convey his message, and overall he is full of real talent and does not waste it. But i am actually not here to glorify Jon Foreman, but the one who gave him his talent. If you haven't already guessed it, it is JesusChrist.Something that never ceases to amaze me, is the fact that He uses people like Jon Foreman to teach us, guide us, and remind us of things we may have forgotten. My wonderful Savior did that for me just this morning. I was listening to music and completing some tasks when his song 'Again' came on.
The lyrics are:
Oh Lord, God of our fathers
this day let it be known
That you Lord,
Are God of the present tense
Oh Lord, Father of history
this day let is be known
That you Lord,
Are present in our human events
Answer me, Oh Lord
Let your people know
That you're turning our heats
Back to You....Again
Holy Holy
You alone are true
Holy Holy
You alone are true
Turn us back towards you
I would like you to go back now, and reread the first verse. That line, 'That you Lord, Are God of the present tense' resided in my mind. The two words, "present tense" struck me. I've always known that God is in control over everything but I've always heard and thought of that in the tense of future, which is true of course. But the thought that God is in control over the present tense, is amazing! God is THE GOD of the present tense. He is in control and protecting me currently. I know this song by heart, but God choose to reveal this truth to me today. I believe he did this because currently I'm not doing so good. And i don't like to admit that. And i don't like to talk about my personal feelings with people, because they usually give me unnecessary or unhelpful advise. And honestly i hide my true feelings from even myself. But it's the truth. And the fact that God cares and says "You know what MaryJane, I'm in control. And not just of your future but your present," means a lot to me.
You may be doing great right now. And I'm so happy that you are. But if you aren't, and you're like me and struggling with something, know that God is in control of your present tense. And rest in that fact. Rest in God.
"God is out refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" Psalm 46:1 [KJV]
