My Complaint
Alright! I'm going to complain about something! Recently I've been noticing that all of the topics and ideas that young people are basing their conversations off of have something to do with media, or romance/crushes opposite gender type stuff. I'm fed up with it! I rode in a car for about 30 minutes with a bunch of boys. They were around the age of 13 to 16, and I'm not even joking, all they talked about was Marvel movies, Batman, Man of Steel, and Comic-Con. The next day i had to ride in that same car, with the same boys, and all they talked about were the same things. I'm not hating on boys. Girls do the same thing, except with different topics (i.e. Pretty Little Liars, One Direction, Shoes, Boys, Make-up, etc.)
I'm honestly disappointed in my peers. I crave intelligent conversations and debates, but I'm left hungry. Now when i say debates i don't mean full out team policy and TeenPact. Those are good at the right time and place. But when i say debates i mean being able to have a different stance on a subject or topic with a different person and arguing or discussing about it AND THEN being able to walk away and not hate each other.
My friend drove me to school most of last year and we would have several of these conversations/debates. Some of the time our topics would be about the most random thing you could think of. Other times we would have a serious conversation about whether it was lawful to vote against homosexuality because we live in a "free" country. Today i went to a writing class and me and a fellow student got into a debate about what topic was more important. In the end he won and no hard feelings are kept.
I'm not praising myself and demeaning others that do not enjoy debate. I do not enjoy debate when it is made into a competition. I find it defeats the purpose. The purpose being to find the common ground and to get a conclusion on the matter. Once you make it a competition the competitors or debaters are only thinking of winning the argument. But again! I am not praising myself. If you do not enjoy debate even in a conversational realm that is understandable. I used to find ALL types of debate useless. I thought like that because i was only thinking about winning the argument, and in the end i usually lost. Once i realized that you can debate and not have to make it a competition i enjoyed it!
Again i understand if you do not like to debate. But i still think that many teens today are not able to hold an intelligent conversation. No! I don't mean you have to talk about politics all the time that would just be annoying. But i do think that you should be able to think deeply into different topics. Such as, being reformed or non-reformed, or whether we should vote against homosexuality when we say we are a "free" country, or even if that new movie that everyone is seeing has a good message.
Also, I'm not saying that talking about media related things is bad. But when that is all you talk about, or can talk about, or all your friends talk about, you may need to get a better education and friends...
